SIM says sorry for 'ill conceived', humiliating orientation games If you're keeping up with the news, you would have probably read about the humiliating orientation games at SIM. When the news first sprung up, i wasn't surprised. It didn't use to be this bad but over the years, organisers have become more bold and more immature. Yes, i'm calling such games immature. When i went to camps, i was TOLD that not participating in such games or jokes was immature. In fact, excuse me. It's the total opposite. I, for one, am not afraid to express my disgust. When i first heard someone told me that, i gave an expression that would have probably made him look at me as an immature kid. No. I have my dignity to take care of and if you're so MATURE, you should've thought about the objectives of the camp instead of coming up with such sexual references. The purpose of orientation camps are to bond students so that when the term starts, they won't feel lonely or outcasted when they need to form project groups. It's one of the reasons why i join camps. It's a great feeling to get to know people and there's this sense of achievement when you play and win OR lose games as a team. It really is. We may not be an extremely close-knit team but we're close enough to sit together in lectures and help each other throughout our program. Back in Temasek Poly, i enjoyed my camps thoroughly and had not much complains about it (except the food...). And being part of 2 organising committees, i knew what the procedure was like planning for something. Going to camps in TP, you will never regret. You not only meet friends you will treasure for life, you will also take back valuable lessons. Why? Because we have such a strict management up there to go through our camp objectives, even down to the objectives of each orientation game proposed. I used to think that it was too rigid and strict. But when such games sprung up, i thought to myself,"Yes. We need someone to CHECK proposals to avoid such unpleasant games." I know my parents may start questioning me about the camps that i have gone if they happen to read or hear about this. But i'm glad to say that the camps that i attended did not push us to such an extent. Even if i were pushed into doing this, i would request to step out of the game. It's ridiculous. What's the objective of such games anyway? To bond? In what way does a game like this help to BOND? Also, if you're caught in a situation like this, please don't be naive and be afraid to feel outcasted to vote out of such games. Why should you be subjected to such outrageous games? I know the feeling of being outcasted, trust me i do. But while you vote out and watch others subject to such acts and laughter, you'll be the one laughing at how they're afraid to be different and let themselves be pressured into performing such disgusting and unnecessary acts. |

Keep holding on,
because you'll get there eventually. |
